OpenDSS
Open Distribution System Simulator (OpenDSS)
An electric-power distribution-system simulator for power-flow, harmonics, dynamics, and distributed-energy-resource studies.
About the Project
Why use this?
OpenDSS is an EPRI-developed distribution-system simulator used to analyze medium- and low-voltage electrical networks. It supports power-flow solutions, harmonic analysis, dynamics, and time-series simulations, with strong support for distributed generation, storage, electric vehicles, and other DER technologies.
Engineers choose OpenDSS when they need a scriptable, open distribution-analysis engine rather than a proprietary GUI-only tool. It is commonly used through its COM/direct APIs and Python interfaces, making it well suited to utility studies, DER hosting-capacity analysis, and automated grid simulations.
